I took my redundancy to heart, it therefore clouded my judgement at the time on some constructive things I could have been doing for myself. Hindsight is great right!
If you're currently navigating redundancy, my heart sincerely goes out to you. Here are a few constructive steps I wish I had taken during that time:
Monetise your skills
Look back through your career and life. What do people say you are really good at but comes easy to you?
Do some market research, if there is a market for it, jump in and test the water, try hosting some free online events to share your skill, if it takes off set up a programme and offer and away you go.
One this will immensely help your confidence and two it gives you another income. Win-win.
Volunteer
When you feel like you cannot help yourself help others.
Giving back makes you appreciate that life is so much more than just a job. Perspective.
Network purposefully
Get out there and encourage others.
Unfortunately, redundancy is a common occurrence, social media link LinkedIn is full of people reaching out and asking for help.
If you spot someone you can help, be it a CV review, connecting them into your network, or just to have a friendly and encouraging chat, do it.
What goes around comes around. Kindness begets more kindness.
Growth
If financial circumstances allow, take this time out for growing yourself, personally and professionally.
Those skills you know you needed to work on, but just never had the time or headspace because your job kept you so busy? Well now is the perfect time to work on them.
Take that course, do the training, get the coaching and most importantly start applying what you learn straight away.
Where one door closes, another door should open, but if it doesn’t…find a window!
